How To Cut My Hair – Ultimate Advice

Cutting your own hair is not too difficult. You’ve just got to do a little reading and learning of basics before you put the scissors to your head! You reading this, is a sign that you‘re on the right track.

Firstly, if you are a nervous type, then this may be hard for you. Although it isn’t particularly dangerous to use scissors on your hair, if you are of a nervous disposition, you will find this pretty difficult so maybe it’s not for you.

OK, the top BIG mistake people make is not practising! It is essential to get a good feel for how to use mirrors properly and understand how to move your hand in accordance with the image in the mirror. This is not simple and perfecting, this will take you no less than half way to getting started!

You’ll need a few tools to get going. A good pair of sharp scissors are needed together with a comb and some large mirrors. The scissors do need to be sharp, else you will not be able to cut properly. For men with short hair, it may also be worth getting clippers; these make cutting hair really simple and fast and will save you lots of time and money!

OK, for your first cut, you should always attempt a simplistic style. Maybe keep all the hair to the same length. It isn’t the most appealing look for most people but you’ve got to start somewhere!

For men, it is usually best to first cut hair from the sides and back and then the top. This is also true for woman but it will change once you start introducing different, more complex styles with feathering and layering.

For long hair, you should brush out from the crown to the desired length, remembering to work in small sections. Then hold the hair between your index finger and middle finger, and cut smoothly with the scissors. Take it slow at first and then speed up once you’ve built up your confidence.

After doing this a few times, you’ll realise that it is actually quite simple and that in fact you could attempt more complicated styles like layering and feathering, etc. You could also think about cutting your friends’ and families’ hair for practise or even some pocket money!

I would like to stress the importance of practising in front of that mirror; 80% of people fail to do this and are put off cutting their own hair completely because of it. DON’T let that be you!
